Montessori Magnet School Library Media Center READING WITH CHILDRENLearning to reading is a process that takes time and plenty of exposure to the printed word. Borrowing books from the Library Media Center provides young children with an opportunity to share books with their families and learn about being responsible for materials that are borrowed. CARE OF BOOKSAs you read with your children, please help them to become aware of the importance of caring for their books. Here are a few things you can share with your children. · FIND A SAFE PLACEHelp your child find a safe place to put his/her library book. This place should be a place where the child may put the book as a part of a regular routine. It should also be a place where the book will be safe from younger children and from pets. · CAREFUL HANDLING When you are turning the pages of the book, model turning pages from the outside corners of the page. This may seem like a small thing, but books are easily torn and simply doing this can save the book from rips and tears. Ask children to use a bookmark to mark their places. Keep pencils and crayons at a distance. · ONE WEEK CHECK OUT Books may be checked out for one week from the Library Media Center. Please help children remember to return their books on time. Books may be returned sooner and children may check out another book when the previous book is returned. · NO FOOD OR DRINK When you are reading the book, remind the child that books are fragile and must be treated with care. Clean hands help to keep the book clean. No food or drink should be near the book while you are reading since accidents can happen easily. · BACKPACK CHECK Books can be damaged in the backpack if there is food or drink in the backpack as well. Slipping the book into a large plastic bag will save it from damage this way. This has been a serious problem for us, so we would truly appreciate your help with this. · REPAIRING BOOKS Once in a while, regardless of how careful we are, books rip or tear. Please leave the mending of library books for the library staff. We have special tapes and glues that are just for that purpose. While we appreciate the effort, our books don't wear bandaids very well. (We really did get a book back with a torn page mended with a bandaid.) For your own torn pages, use "magic tape" rather than cellophane tape. It has more flexibility and will not yellow or stiffen with age.
We hope you will enjoy reading with your child and that you will find the books as pleasing as the process. We hope, too, that you will assist us with these few activities so that Montessori Library Media Center’s books can be shared by many of our students. Thank you for your assistance. Carol J.
