Classification of animals is based upon:

grouping animals according to characteristics they have in common and separating them on the basis of differences they have.

Approximately 23,500 species of bony fish are known today. Many species may yet be discovered as we investigate the deep sea.

Bony fishes are cold-blooded vertebrates that breathe through gills and use fins for swimming.

They have skeletons of bone, scales, paired fins, one pair of gill openings, jaws, and paired nostrils.

They inhabit almost every body of water and 58% live in marine (saltwater) environments.
