ALPHABETICAL  ORDER

STAGE ONE: How do I remember

The alphabet has a standard order.  You have memorized it from beginning to end.  Now break it up and memorize it in chunks.

• CHUNK 

  • Break the alphabet into four parts.

  • Play with one set at a time.

  • Order them, play with them, make anagrams of them, make games with them, draw with them, make puzzles with them, quiz your neighbors and have them quiz you using them, until you know which letters are in each part by heart.

   

• COLORIZE THEM

  • Make sets of letters that have the four sections broken into four different colors.

   

• MAKE UP  ACRONYMS  WITH THEM

  • All Boys Can Dunk donuts Every Friday

  • Gangsters Hope for Inky Jet Kettles Like Mine

  • Not One Pigeon has Quick Ringing Sounds

  • To Understand Vultures Wear Xtra Yucky  Zippers

   

• MEMORIZE THEM IN CHUNKS

  • Have a contest for each section of the alphabet

    • How many things that can be placed in a envelope can you find for each section of the alphabet.

  • Sort things by letters.            

    • Sort books by letters (author, title, or

    • In the library, find a book by an author from each letter of the alphabet. (Be sure to tell the librarian what you are doing.)

    • Play lots of alphabet games.  Games
