Sam, Sam the Index Man

has but one job...

To point you in the right direction

An index is a guide to information.  The index tells you where to find what you are looking for in that resource.

Libraries have an index in the form of their computer catalogs.

Nonfiction books have indexes in the back of the book.

Sets of books, such as encyclopedias, usually have a whole volume designated as an index.
