Compare these two leaves: What is the same and what is different about them?

Look closely.

 

 

COPPER BEECH

 

AMERICAN BASSWOOD

Alternate, simple leaves, 2"-4" long. Oval shaped leaves with a tiny point at the tip. Leaf edges slightly irregular. Coppery color in spring.

  Alternate, simple leaves, 4"-8" long, rounded heart-shaped, fine-toothed; elongated point at tip;  asymmetrical  at leaf base. Leaf stem can be 2" long.
