Game 3   "CATEGORIZE FOOD WORDS"

This game gives students practice in categorizing within a topic.

MATERIALS

• 1 set of food words spread face down on the table as if playing Concentration.
• Large Food Pyramid Chart. (Ours is a bulletin board set that can be purchased in Teacher Stores or from catalog companies such as Constructive Playthings.  It is called Food Guide Pyramid and produced by Trend Enterprises from St. Paul Minnesota.
• Two extra categories to place beside the pyramid. (Written on 5"x7" pieces of paper.)
    a.  How we get our food             b.  How we fix and eat our food.
• My Second Picture Dictionary (1 copy per student).

Below the directions is a set of food words for second graders.

DIRECTIONS

Players: 2-4

1. Players who goes first is the one whose first name starts with the letter closest to the letter M.

2. This is a cooperative game; it is played against the clock.
3. Player 1 turns up one card and tries to place it in the food category on the food pyramid chart.  Player 2 may assist in placement.  If neither player knows where the word goes, put word aside to look up in the dictionary later.
4. Players 2, 3, 4 repeat the play above.
5. When players have 3 cards they can not place, play must stop for a dictionary consultation.  Each player uses his/her dictionary to look up the word.  The consult to decide where the word belongs.
6. When time is called, players count the number of cards they have placed in categories.  Students and teachers together can check for accuracy.

   Stage 1    50 cards

7. Stage 2    75 cards
8. Stage 3    100 cards
9. Stage 4    125 cards
10. Stage 5    150 cards

    Note: Students in our school who play this game, almost always go directly to Stage 5.  The words are familiar and they know what they mean.  I suspect if we built a category chart for wild animals, and chose to categorize them in a similar fashion, the game would be more difficult.
